Introduction

The Borough of Avalon, New Jersey, is an oceanfront community located on the Atlantic coast about twenty-five miles south of Atlantic City. We share what is commonly referred to as the "Seven Mile Island" with another community called the Borough of Stone Harbor. Our community has a year round population of approximately 1,900 that increases in the summer to around 45,000. Our full time police force is comprised of twenty (20) full time officers and five (5) dispatchers. Because of the influx of vacationers and part time residents, our department is supplemented by approximately fifteen (15) special law enforcement officers during the summer months. The Avalon Police Department is one of numerous small police departments in Cape May County whose principal industry is summer tourism.
