CHOWDER TIME: AVALON CHAMBER TO HOLD SEAFOOD FESTIVAL OCT. 10th +11th

(Avalon ,NJ)—The Avalon Chamber of Commerce is making final preparations for this year’s Seafood
Festival, being held Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th, at the 30th Street Beach in Avalon.

“This year’s seafood festival promises to be one of the best in recent memory”, said Ed Galante, President of
the Avalon Chamber of Commerce. “This is the biggest postseason event in Avalon, and we’re anxious to
again welcome thousands of families to Avalon for great food, and great fun”.

This year’s Seafood Festival will be held on Saturday, October 10th from 11am-5pm, and on Sunday, October
11th, from Noon-5pm. The event takes place at 30th and the Beach in the parking lot adjacent to the Avalon
Community Hall.

On Saturday, there will be dozens of vendors selling everything from merchandise to crafts to some of the
best food served at the Jersey Shore. There will be live music from the Snake Brothers, a performance from
the Joanne Reagan Dancers, a magic show for the kids, and Jerry the Stilt Walker making balloon animals
for the children. On Sunday, all of the vendors and entertainment return. One highlight on Sunday will be
the famous “Chowder Contest” where the public votes on the winner of the best chowder at the festival.
In 2008, Sylvester’s in Avalon took home the trophy for Best Chowder. During both days, there is beer and
wine available for purchase.

This year’s Seafood Festival will also include the Borough of Avalon’s first-ever “Green Fair”. Dozens of
vendors will be inside the Avalon Community Center explaining products and services that help make
Avalon a “green” community. There will be plenty of giveaways during the entire Green Fair event, and
numerous educational opportunities as well. The Green Fair will be held on Saturday, from 10am-3pm.

“We’re very pleased to have Avalon’s Green Fair take place along our Seafood Festival”, Galante said. “It
will compliment the festival and give our visitors even more opportunities to get something for free, and
learn how to go green at the same time”.

The Avalon Chamber of Commerce Seafood Festival has no admission charge, and there is plenty of
parking near the festival site. Proceeds of the event benefit chamber activities.

The Avalon Volunteer Fire Department Urges Avalon Residents to "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned."

Avalon, NJ, October 4, 2009 - Once a child touches a hot stove, as the clich goes - he learns his lesson, stay away from a hot stove. This clich does not take into account the pain and suffering from burns and burns should not be part of the learning process.

That's why the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week 2009 - October 4-10 - to urge Avalon residents to "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned." This year's campaign focuses on ways to keep homes fire safe and prevent painful burns. In September, Fire Chief Ed Dean spoke on fire and burn prevention at the Senior Citizens Luncheon. The fire department and bureau of fire prevention will speak with children at the Avalon Elementary School and Happy Day Nursery School during the month of October.

The statistics are staggering. Each year roughly 3,000 people die as a result of home fires and burns, and more than 200,000 individuals are seen in the nation's emergency rooms for burn injuries.

"The most common types of burn injuries result from fire or flame burns, scalds and contact burns," said Avalon Fire Chief Ed Dean. "Burns are painful and can result in serious scarring and even death. When we take extra caution in our homes to ensure that the curling iron is out of children's reach or pot handles are turned away from the edge of the stove, such injuries are entirely preventable. Keeping our homes safe from fire and preventing devastating burn injuries is a healthy change we can make happen."

By following simple safety rules, you can "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned."

  • Keep hot foods and liquids away from tables and counter edges so they cannot be pulled or knocked over.
  • Have a 3-foot "kid-free" zone around the stove.
  • Never hold a child in your arms while preparing hot food or drinking a hot beverage.
  • Be careful when using things that get hot such as curling irons, oven, irons, lamps, heaters.
  • Install tamper-resistant receptacles to prevent a child from sticking an object in the outlet.
  • Never leave a child alone in a room with a lit candle, portable heater, lit fireplace or stove, or where a hot appliance might be in use.
  • Wear short or close-fitting sleeves when cooking.
  • Set your hot water temperature no higher than 120 degrees.
  • Install anti-scald valves on shower heads and faucets.

Fire Prevention Week is actively supported by fire departments across the country. For 85 years fire departments have observed Fire Prevention Week, making it the longest running public health and safety observance on record.

AVALON POLICE RECOGNIZE PUT THE BREAKS ON FATALITIES DAY OCTOBER 10TH

(Avalon) Motorists in New Jersey and throughout the nation are asked to join a day-long effort on October 10, 2009, designed to increase awareness about safe driving behaviors and keep the State’s roadways fatality free for one-day.

Known as Put The Brakes On Fatalities Day, the national initiative was designed to unite the country in moving toward zero fatalities for one full day by encouraging motorists to obey all traffic laws, including buckling up, every ride; driving the posted speed limit; avoiding distractions while driving; and always being safe and sober behind the wheel.

Last year in New Jersey, 591 individuals lost their lives in motor vehicle-related crashes. This number represents a 19 percent decline from the previous year, and also marks the lowest number of recorded motor vehicle deaths in the State since 1948.

“Clearly, this effort will go a long way in our continuing efforts to stem the tide of tragedies that occur every day on New Jersey’s roadways, Chief Dean said. “Shining the spotlight on this one day can help create a groundswell of support for safe driving practices that can carry over throughout the year.”

Like last year, police departments throughout the State will once again be asked to report crash information (total crashes, injuries crashes and fatalities) for October 10 to the Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the State’s lead traffic safety agency. The Division will post this information on its website and distribute it to the media.

Approximately 66 percent of the 496 police agencies in the State, as well as the State Police, reported its crash data to the Division following last year’s “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day.” A total of 1,065 crashes took place in New Jersey on that day, resulting in 201 injuries and two fatalities.

“Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day not only raises awareness about the individual responsibility we have for our driving behaviors, but also engages drivers in making positive changes behind-the-wheel every day of the year,” Dean added.

Additional information on the Put The Brakes On Fatalities Day is available by logging on to www.brakesonfatalities.org or the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety’s web site, at www.njsaferoads.com.

AVALON BOULEVARD TO EXPERIENCE REPAIR WORK DURING OCTOBER, ‘09
Work on Ingrams Thorofare expected to begin on or about October 13th

(Avalon, NJ)—Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster announced that some deck repair work to the bridge crossing Ingrams Thorofare will begin on or about October 13th, 2009, and will take approximately three to four weeks to complete.

Foster issued a letter to the Borough of Avalon stating that the county is proceeding with a deck repair contract to address deteriorated concrete in the riding surface of Avalon Boulevard, also known as County Road No. 601.

The deck repairs were delayed from this past spring construction season to allow for heavy truck traffic to bring sand into Avalon during a beach fill project.

One lane on the bridge will be typically closed from 6:00am Mondays until 7:00am on Fridays. All traffic will alternate using the remaining open lane on the bridge through either the use of flaggers or temporary traffic signal system. The long lane closing periods will allow the use of high quality repair materials. Signs and variable message boards will be installed prior to the start of construction so as to alert motorists of the pending construction project.

Further updates will be made available on www.avalonboro.org, ShoreTV Channel 2, and Avalon’s radio Station, 1630AM.
