When the Order is given to EVACUATE

DON'T PANIC. An orderly, but immediate evacuation from the island will help ensure that you arrive safely at your destination.

• Take your At-Home and Evacuation Kits

• Gather your important documents: insurance papers with the name and phone number of your agent, medical records, driver's license, property photos, inventory check lists etc

• Turn off water, gas and electricity

• Lock all windows and doors

• Call someone located at your destination: if it is a hotel or motel, check for vacancy and make or confirm your reservation; if it is a shelter, let them know you are on your way

• Call friends and relatives to inform them of your destination. When you arrive, call again to let them know you are safe

• Leave the area, but not the region. Main highways may be congested and the more time spent on the road, the greater your chance of being stranded by the storm

• The Borough of Avalon Police/Rescue/Fire have, for your convenience, created a form by which you can enter all of your information, medications, emergency contacts etc and submit them to the Avalon Rescue Squad where this information will be kept in case of an evacuation. If the Borough is evacuated, Avalon First Responders will gather the information on these forms and act accordingly. These forms have been devised for the elderly or disabled and those who cannot safely evacuate the island. You can access the form HERE.

EVACUATION ROUTE FROM THE BOROUGH OF AVALON

The evacuation route from the Borough of Avalon will be from 30th Street (Avalon Boulevard) west to the Garden State Parkway, taking the GSP north to the Atlantic City Expressway then taking the AC Expressway West.

During the evacuation period the Borough of Avalon will be secured and protected by the Borough of Avalon Police Department and in certain circumstances the New Jersey National Guard may assist.
